Villards Cup 2012: A game for a cause

If there’s one sport aside from boxing that is closest to the heart of the many Filipinos, it has to be billiards. Well that of course is my opinion. I mean, billiards is a game for all. It’s a sport that can be played by anyone. Men, women, kids and adults can play it. And I’m glad and honored to witnessed 16 amateur pool players in our country execute their shots in the Villards Cup 2012 last September 23-24, 2012.

Villards Cup 2012 was held at the newly opened Starmall in San Jose Del monte Bulacan. The two day event aims to support the amateur billiards players in our country. The game for a cause was attended by some of the amateur billiards players, media, fans  and of course the Philippine Billiards legends; Efren ‘Bata’ Reyes, Francisco ‘Django’ Bustamante, Ronnie ‘The Volcano’ Alcano and Dennis ‘Robocop’ Orcollo who were very supportive to the amateur players.

According to Mrs Cynthia Villar, managing director of the Villar foundation, who also attended the closing ceremony, "Villards Cup is one of the sports-oriented programs of the Villar Foundation to encourage the youth to engage in sports, and keep them away from the streets and from illegal drugs." And in that, I am all with her.

Here’s to give you a preview on the awarding ceremony of the Villards Cup.

Like these men, I believe there are a lot of Filipino players waiting to be discovered. May it be billiards, basketball, boxing, swimming or any other sports or field. And Villiards Cup is one of the venue in discovering and developing our Philippines’ potentials.

So back to game, winners will receive not only big cash prizes and a trophy but also a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Now, can you guess who won the Villards Cup 2012? Well, here they are:
