Hari ng Tondo (Where I am King), Carlos Siguion Reyna’s comeback film and entry to 10th Cinemalaya Film Festival

Hari ng Tondo, an official entry to the 10th Cinemalaya Film Festival under Director’s Showcase category, sees the return of the award winning director Carlos Siguion Reyna, after a 14-year break from feature-length film making.

According to the director, he is grateful to have returned for a number of reasons.

One, there is much he empathized with in all the characters in this film. From Ricardo’s single-mindedness, the grandchildren’s initial skepticism, the rich parent’s indifference to the worlds outside of their own, to the Tondo dwellers’ pragmatic mockery of  messiahs. These contradictory attitudes reflect current polar attitudes among different classes, particularly the self styled saviors and the dispossessed.

Another reason is how he missed the film making drug. As Hari ng Tondo privileged him to work with a great company of production admin, energetic and professional creative staff, and a talented cast culled from film, television and theatre --an exciting mix of people from different worlds.

Carlos Siguion Reyna also said that Hari ng Tondo allowed him to work with members of his own family and tightened ties with his late father, Leonardo Siguion Reyna in whose memory he crafted the film.

The film has simply been an intense professional, creative and personal journey for him, born in Tondo, more than five decades ago.

Hari ng Tondo is a timely family movie far from our cultural connotation.  ‘Tis a movie every Filipino of different walks in life can appreciate.

Synopsis

Ricardo Villena, a self-made man on the verge of bankruptcy, brings his grandchildren back to the community that shaped him, to salvage his self-worth. As he aims to educate his progeny, save his birthplace and the way of life he grew up with, he discovers painful realizations about his own story-amidst the cynicism of attitudes in the Tondo he thought he knew.  Click here for official full trailer
